READ THROUGH ACT I, SCENE 1.

We have started reading The Taming of the Shrew and will continue to read it throughout this week. Please check this blog for daily information and reading assignments. Feel free to use sparknotes.com as a supplemental resource to help you understand the reading; however, do not use it as a substitute for your reading.

As you read, please annotate for the following:

SOCIAL EXPECTATIONS – you may want to consider…

What are the social expectations of the time?
What is Shakespeare saying about social expectations?
What are the consequences for following or rebelling against society’s expectations?
How necessary are social expectations?

CRITICAL PERSPECTIVES –

You have been assigned two critical perspectives from the “Critical Perspectives” yellow sheet to defend in a debate at the end of the unit. Be sure you understand what each of these perspectives mean and that you gather evidence to support each argument as you read.

Rock on with Shakespeare!!!

For homework tonight, please finish reading the Induction of The Taming of the Shrew.

As you read, please annotate for evidence that reveals information regarding social expectations of the time period in which the play takes place. Pay particular attention to gender, marriage, and social class expectations. As you read, find evidence that will help you make conjectures about the following questions:

· What were the social expectations of this time?
· How flexible were the social expectations of this time?
· What do you think Shakespeare was using the induction to say about social expectations of this time?

Homework: 1/11/07

For homework, write a letter to Queen Elizabeth or Lord Chamberlain recommending whether or not the Queen should endorse William Shakespeare based on the data you have about the expectations of his time and whether or not he follows these expectations. Remember - Queen Elizabeth is a very moral person and strongly believes in upholding the expectations of her society.

Be sure to have an introduction, two body paragraphs with two pieces of evidence in each, and a conclusion.

You may use the first person, and this may be neatly handwritten.

Good luck!
