Extra Credit Opportunity

IF you are completely caught up with all of your semester work OR have consulted me regarding a plan to make up missing work, you have an opportunity to earn extra credit.

In honor of the upcoming Memorial Day, you may write "remember" my brother, who is serving with the US Marine Corps in Al Qaim, Iraq. You may write him a letter, draw him a picture, print out jokes or stories from the Internet, find an interesting article in the newspaper, or a combination of any of the above. What I am hoping to do is to send him a package full of fun/funny/interesting/inspiring things that will bring some happiness and excitement into his life. Be creative!

Letters may be written to: Lance Corporal Brandon Lefebvre

Extra credit will be assigned based on thought and effort put into your submission.

Submissions will be accepted through Friday, May 18th.

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday that is observed on the final Monday of May (observed this year on 2007-05-28). It was formerly known as Decoration Day. This holiday commemorates U.S. men and women who have died in military service to their country. It began first to honor Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War. After World War I, it expanded to include those who died in any war or military action. One of the longest standing traditions is the running of the Indianapolis 500, which has been held in conjunction with Memorial Day since 1911.

You should carefully choose an independent reading book for second semester. You will be reading this book for approximately five weeks while relating it on a weekly basis to our inquiries of maturity and character. Therefore, you should choose a work of fiction, a biography, or an autobiography that will help you gain a greater insight to one or more of the following questions:

To what extent are the choices people make a reflection of their acceptance, or rejection, of the societal laws/rules/norms to which they are subjected?
What distinguishes someone as a mature person?
To what extent are people conditioned to obey authority?
To what extent should we question or obey authority?
What characteristics does society most value?
How should people respond when desired characteristics are challenged?

You will be held accountable for reading by connecting your independent reading to the book we are reading in class through various responses. In each response you should:

Answer one of the questions above with a well-written claim.
Show how your claim is supported by evidence in your book and evidence from a book, theme, or character from what we have read/are reading in class.
